‘Gift on the Way’ seemed to show up out of the blue, right after I nearly called it quits on this painting. I put it down, walked away, and decided to let it go. But something drew me back again, and I scrubbed much of what I had painted already before out of the way (the beauty of working with gouache!), and found a whole new picture.

‘Gift on the Way’ refers to those many gifts that are here for us now, or on their way, even when we have lost faith that they will ever show up. My gift was persevering and finding this image in the midst of the muddy uninteresting colors I’d been bogged down in. What a gift!
