Taking photos as I paint helps me become a better painter
I started painting this group of six 8”x8” canvases in April 2025. I grouped them all together as you see here, and started by painting them with the same several colors, as can be seen in the photo at the bottom of this post. I had the foresight to take a photo of that round, then the next 2 rounds, up to this one you see today.
In the midst of uncertainty, paint new pictures and tell new stories
This week brought me the energy to complete paintings in progress, and find some improbable tales to tell about them too.
Making art with my friends
Making art with friends is fun and rewarding.
Like many artists and creatives, I spend a lot of time working in my own little bubble.
Having fun and resting makes for new inspiration
Every time I have the opportunity to leave town and take a break of some kind, there’s a detachment process from my office, studio, and practice.
I am unplugging, which feels uncomfortable at first, until suddenly it’s a wonderful relief.
Notes on getting out of my own way as an artist
I’ve been learning about how my creative practice works, and what I need to do to get out of my own way so that my paintings can happen more easily for me.
Some of this is just showing up and painting, with an emphasis on play and thinking outside of the old structure I used to think I had to work within.
Every painting is an opportunity to say hello
Whether or not you intend for your creations to say hello, they do. Even if the person being said hello to is you, that is hello.
As a psychic and psychic teacher, I think about this often. Early on in my psychic training, I was taught that saying hello to myself and to my body is one of the most powerful ways to facilitate and create space for healing to happen.
Being an artist has helped me see that I can create myself as I choose.
If I am not the one creating myself, who or what is?
As an artist, I know that I am the one who has to show up to make the art I want to make.
I'm planting flowers: my art wrap-up for 2023, plus a peek at what's coming in 2024
I am planting flowers for this coming year.
Some of these will be actual flowers in my new garden. I’m also planting herbs, tomatoes, and maybe another vegetable or two, all of which come with flowers at some point in their growth cycle.
Deep diving into my art making space
One of the best gifts I’ve given myself this autumn has been the permission to not have to produce any art at all.
It’s not about how much I put out there, share on my site or social media. I’ve decided to give myself space from that internal drive to produce more work, and that all of it has to be good.
Why human creativity matters now more than ever before
Your very human creativity matters now more than ever before.
Nothing outside of you can replace your unique and creative human spirit.
Competition among artists is a pointless waste of time
I believe most competition is ridiculous, pointless, and needlessly programmed into all of us from Day 1.
Misogyny in Art School
It's always so much fun to see previously unknown women artists being 'discovered', (especially after they're dead!), after being taught in my art history classes that they never existed.
